This day long workshop with Susan Smereka provides an opportunity to create a beautiful hand crafted journal. The process begins with disassembling an old hardcover book while learning the intricacies of how books are put together. Then you will rebuild the signatures with pages of the original book, pages from other books and blank journal pages. With waxed linen thread you will be guided through a step by step process of binding your new journal together. No experience necessary. This journal makes a great gift and the workshop itself is a gift.
All supplies provided. You can bring your own ruler, bone folder, scissors, utility knife, self-healing cutting mat, awl, and pencil. $25-$35 (pay what you can)
Workshop will be at New City Galerie
This Exhibition is the culmination of my residency at New City Galerie. I was part the the jury to find work relating to book forms and the human body. Artists and authors are exploring the intimate relationship [developed] between the human body and the physical book. How [have] DO the tactile characteristics of the book impacted how the/a body reads? How does the body make books? What occurs in between this give and take? What is the nature of this symbiosis? The jury: Ben Aleshire, Glynnis Fawkes and Susan Smereka. I created two videos during my residency in memory of my brother: not not bubbly flow was created for the installation in the show "bookbody," and level set: loop was the first one I complete soon after the shock of his death.Read More
